Rhinelander Deer Hunt On Monday City Council Agenda

en.wikipedia.org

If the city council approves next week, Rhinelander will have a bow-and-arrow deer hunt this year.

After a rise in the number of deer living within the Rhinelander city limits caused traffic problems and property damage, the city council  and police department nearly a decade ago set up a procedure  to thin the herd.

Early hunts proved successful, but by 2013, with fewer numbers, the hunt was called off.

But Mayor Dick Johns thinks it will return this year...

"....it's my understanding they will be hunting deer in the city of Rhinelander. It has to be permission given by all the property owners if they want deer hunting on their property and the restrictions like we had in the past...."

The city-wide hunt began in 2006. Hunters harvested 157 deer during the city hunt from 2006 through 2009. More than 100 deer were harvested in the first two years the hunt was held. By 2009, that number had dropped to 18, prompting officials' decision not to hold the hunt in 2010. In 2011 and 2012 there were shortened hunts, and the last two years no hunt was held.
