Rhinelander Gets Funding For New Bike Trail

commons.wikimedia.org

The city of Rhinelander has received final approval for a grant that will begin a new bike trail on the city's south and west side.

City Council member Alex Young says the $135,000 grant will enable construction of a paved, multi-use path along Kemp Street on the city's west side. It will join the already built portion of the Riverwalk trail by the Chamber of Commerce, but will head down Boyce Drive...

".....and then when you go down to the intersection of the Pelican and Wisconsin Rivers which is adjacent to that new boat landing which the city has built there, cross there and then move along the Pelican River with that same 10 foot wide paved path...."

Total trail length will be 1.2 miles. The trail will connect visitors at the hotels on the city's west side with a way to walk or bike to some scenic areas in the city or go towards downtown. Young says it will also provide more activity in what he calls the under-utilized Shepard city park off Boyce Drive...

".....between this trail, the new boat landing we built down there, the demolition of the old sewage treatment plant, the most under-utilized city park, Shepard Park. Now we're going to have a real asset there at the confluence of those two rivers...."

Bids will be let out in May with construction beginning in July.
