Rhinelander HS Mock Trial Team Looking For New Record

en.wikipedia.org

It's off to state for the Rhinelander High School Mock Trial team this weekend, to see if they could extend a winning streak that has gone on for decades.

Mock Trial is a competition involving teams in a courtroom-style setting arguing each side of a designated question.

One of the  coaches, Kathy Vick-Martini,  says the team is ready for competition...

".....Saturday the 12 regional champions and four wildcard team will be competing. At the end of the day the top two teams will be announced and they will compete for the championship on Sunday...."

She praises the other coaches...

"....our assistant attorney coach is Amy Ferguson. We also get advice from Judge Mike Bloom, who sets up his courtroom every Sunday for us and gives us feedback on how we're doing...."

T his year's case involves the arrest of a homeless person, a suspect in the stealing of a purse. During his arrest, the person had a seizure which the arresting officer took as the person trying to resist arrest.

Vick-Martini says the team is ready and has the experience to do well in competition. In the 32 years the program has been around, Rhinelander has won the state tournament 17 times, more than all of the other teams in the state combined.

She says for the past 30 consecutive years, Rhinelander has won the regional title in five different locations.

Vick-Martini says that figure might also be a national record.

Rhinelander has won the national title once.

Team member and WXPR contributor Anna Catlin will file a story about the competition at a later time.
