The chance for Rhinelander citizens to see first hand what city police officers do is again open to the public.
The Rhinelander Citizens Police Academy is accepting applicants for the next class. Police Chief Michael Steffes says this is the ninth annual academy. The academy begins February 25 and runs through April 21. Steffes says participants get an inside view of law enforcement's daily activities...
"....we really enjoy having the opportunity to invite people into our building and our squad cars to be able to see the community through the eyes of a police officer...."
Chief Steffes says there are eight sections of learning including what types of illegal drugs are in the community, crime scene investigations, and Steffes says St. Patrick's Day falls on an academy night....
".....St. Patrick's Day falls on a Citizens Academy night. That night we'll be having the OWI night where we will have people come in to drink some alcohol, some volunteers, so they can perform field sobriety tests on them. See what officers are looking for on the street...."
The students also get one night to work with the next door Rhinelander Fire Department. The sessions run from 6-10 p.m. If people want to get more information, they can stop by the police department or go to the department'swebpage. Steffes says the goal is to get better communication between the public and its police department.
