The School District of Rhinelander voted in favor of a three year referendum at last night’s school board meeting. The referendum came on the heels of the statewide budget cut made to the educational system this year. Superintendent Kelli Jacobi says the declining student enrollment, inflation and increased poverty rates in the district are large contributing factors.
“We are not making recommendations to do any of these things, they’re all bad for our students, and they’re not providing the best for our students. We know that to reduce a large number of staff number we would have to reduce the number of AP classes, we would have to reduce the number of electives, we would have to reduce foreign languages from 2-1…”
Adding a FAB Lab to the district was also talked about. However, because of the referendum, the school board decided receiving grants and gifts would be crucial for the installment of a FAB Lab. Jacobi says there are a lot of options to consider and each proposed change will be made with the students’ best interest in mind.
She says presentations regarding program and budget adjustments will be available to the public soon. The referendum will be eligible for vote February 16.
