Rhinelander is close to having its first dog park.
The city Parks, Buildings and Grounds committee unanimously approved the use of Shepard Park on the city's southside as an off-leash, fenced in dog park.
Tina Werres has long sought a facility. Earlier this year, the request to locate the park at Pioneer Park was rejected after other groups objected. But the little used Shepard Park along Boyce Drive was suggested and Werres told the committee she had complied with the committee's requests...
"...I'm here again to get approval for the use of Shepard Park for the purposes of establishing an off-leash, fenced-in dog park.At the last Parks committee meeting you asked me to return two things, an engineered, professional map and the finished Task Force report..."
The committee also received Monday a long-anticipated comprehensive report on what the public wants to see done at Rhinelander's parks. Among the recommendations was a dog park.
A key component was fencing to contain the unleashed pets. Werres says they have the money for phase one fencing of the project from Petco, located in Rhinelander, which was confirmed by a Petco official. 881 people had signed a petition to back the dog park.
The full city council needs to approve the proposal at its next meeting in June.
