Off-Road Park Change Request Moves Forward

en.wikipedia.org

A Forest County Board sub-committee has moved forward a request to have more review whether to allow a large off-road park.

The Wisconsin Off-Road Vehicle Park, Inc. would like to develop the miles- long park on land that the county would buy to develop the facility.

The sub-committee agreed to send to the full Forestry committee a question whether to amend the county's 15 year Comprehensive Land Use Plan to include an off-road park.

Wisconsin Off-Road Vehicle Park  President John Schnoor says they are looking for a clearer direction from Forest county...

"....the Forestry committee established a sub-committee to potentially, uh, hopefully, work out a Memo of Understanding between Forest county and (WORVPI) that will allow us to move forward with the project...."

The full Forestry committee will hear the recommendation from the sub-committee on October 7. At that time, the committee could direct staff to write revised rules allowing the park into the Comprehensive Plan. Once amended, the changes would go to a public hearing before the matter would reach the full Forest county board to decide whether to amend the plan to include an off-road park in the Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

Proponents have touted economic benefits should the large park be developed. But opponents have said county taxpayers could be caught with a large cost if public funding is not found to buy the land for the park with no guarantee of an economic return.  The park as proposed would be in the towns of Caswell and Ross.

The Vilas County Board recently amended its land use plan to allow ATV's on county roads and property.
