Roads, Airports Busy As Holiday Weekend Begins

Wikimedia Commons

AAA is estimating nearly 51 million Americans are traveling for Thanksgiving this year making it the busiest holiday travel weekend in over a decade.

Airports are going to be busy as well, including the Rhinelander-Oneida County Airport says Director Joe Brauer. He says the two flights are full in both directions to Minneapolis-St. Paul and Rhinelander.

Brauer says if you are flying, be even more prepared....

"....basically what they ask is you check in a little bit earlier. Normally it's 75 minutes to an hour-and-a-half prior to departure, but the airlines are asking you do 90 minutes. An extra 15 minutes to make sure everything runs smooth, you get the passengers checked through the secure area in a timely manner....."

AAA is estimating the largest growth in holiday travel is by air travel, at five percent, with nearly 4 million travelers.

Consumers will pay the cheapest average airfare since 2013. 89 percent of all travelers, 45.5 million, are taking a Thanksgiving road trip, an increase of 3.2 percent over last year. One negative is motorists will pay the highest fuel prices since 2014.
