School Breakfasts Focus Of National Awareness Week

en.wikipedia.org

Wake Up to School Breakfast is the theme of National School Breakfast Week.

At Rhinelander Schools, Food Service Director Pat Karaba says between 500 and 600 students participate in school breakfast each week. The number is higher in the lower grades than at the high school.

The week is designated to see if more students would take breakfast at the schools. She says many times in a hectic morning breakfast can be missed.

That meal, Karaba says, gives a student the fuel their brain needs in a classroom. On March 8, the menu includes a mini chocolate chip French toast along with the usual offerings. Students on free and reduced lunch aren't charged for the meal, but Karaba says even if you do pay, it isn't costly...

"....say on that pancake morning your getting your pancakes, a fruit or juice and a carton of milk. That's a pretty good breakfast a $1.10. Yes, a reasonably prices meal...."

The program is federally funded. Breakfast is served at all Rhinelander public schools. She says there will be some prizes awarded to students and classrooms with increased participation during the week.
