Despite patches of snow on the ground, it is spring, and Eagle River’s Olson Memorial Library is celebrating the season on Saturday with the launch of its Seed Library. WXPR’s Emily Bright reports.
Debbie Jircik is excited about the start of growing season. Jircik is co-organizer of Eagle River’s new seed library, and she hopes that more people than ever will have access to growing food.
“The whole idea behind it is to have a commons that is accessible to everybody and to encourage people to learn about growing both food and some pollinators, and in the process they’re supporting biodiversity and they’re supporting locally adapted plants.”
Community members can check out seeds to grow beans, peas, peppers, tomatoes, herbs, and more in their own gardens. At the end of the season, borrowers are asked to harvest some of their seeds to keep the library’s collection going. The library will offer classes throughout the season on saving seeds and planning gardens.
