Sen. Johnson Says Timber Agreement "A Good Start"

Official U.S. Govt. webpage picture

After a successful walleye fishing trip Saturday morning on Trout Lake with a local guide, Sen. Ron Johnson stopped at Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty in Minocqua for lunch and to answer a few questions from reporters and others.

The Republican senator was asked about the recent signing of the Good Neighbor Authority (GNA) agreement between the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Forest Service to expand timber harvesting by twenty-five percent in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

It’s certainly a good start. What we want to see is to make sure what’s the allowable harvest out of the national forest is actually harvested so we got the lumber to supply all the industries in upper Wisconsin. We’ve seen how effectively the state and the counties and the tribes manage their lands. It’s ‘bout time for the national forest to manage their lands as well.

I’m just glad to see that this agreement has been entered into; it’s good for the region and certainly good for job creation.

The GNA agreement was also supported by U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat. Sen. Johnson was asked if we could see further cooperation between the two major parties."

"Let’s hope so. It’s certainly been my approach for the last four and half years. I’ve been trying to find the areas of agreement. Take a look at how I’m chairing the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs; we first issued a mission statement -- to enhance the economic and national security of America. We then listed a bunch of priorities, and we’ve reported out 49 pieces of legislation on a bipartisan and almost unanimous basis to make the incremental improvements to put this nation back on the right course. That’s been my approach and I hope we can continue down that path..."

Johnson has been touring the northern counties this past week.
