Silent Sports Study Shows Large Impact in North

en.wikipedia.org

A recent study shows the increasing economic impact of silent sports in northern Wisconsin.

The report was authored by three UW-Extension researchers, a bicycle industry consultant and a former graduate student.

The study surveyed Ashland, Bayfield and Sawyer counties in 2012. The authors administered a year-long set of surveys.

About 56,500 individual trips were made by nonresidents to participate in silent sports activities defined as cross country skiing, mountain biking, and running.

Participants made an average of 4 trips to Ashland, Bayfield and Sawyer counties each year and spent an average of 2.4 nights in the area per trip, participating in 1.8 events..

Patrick Goggin...with UW-Extension Lakes Partnership...says the silent sports athletes spend while they are here...

?

"....we have trails like that(from the study) in Oneida and Vilas and Forest counties and throughout the northeast part of Wisconsin. There are opportunities like this all around...for folks to come and enjoy the Northwoods. And if they(visit) they don't just ski, they try the other things...."

On average, the active silent sports enthusiasts reported spending about $468 per trip with about $260 of this spending taking place locally.
