'Soft Start' On New Vilas Co. Courthouse Security Begins Soon

Tighter security at the Vilas County courthouse in Eagle River will begin Monday with all visitors to enter at one location in the new addition on Court Street with security guards doing electronic sweeps of persons and package inspections.

The public property committee announced this week initial screening of visitors will be mostly educational in what county clerk Dave Alleman termed a “soft start.”

“Per Mar Security will be handing out information on what the process will be,” Alleman said. “Our screening system has been shipped and will be in operation quickly. Until then we will have a 'soft start' with information on what the public can expect and lists of prohibited items.”

These include any firearms or chemical or electronic personal protection devices, batons, knives, martial arts weapons, alcohol, razor blades, and combustible gases or flammable liquids. The security and screening protocol will be on the March 24 county board agenda for adoption.
