St. Germain Electors To Vote Wed. On Land Purchase

Electors in the Vilas county town of St. Germain will vote Wednesday whether to have the town purchase 237 acres that adjoins town property.

Integrys Energy Group, the parent of Wisconsin Public Service, is offering the land for purchase.

Town Chair Walt Camp says the purchase price is just under $500,000, but the state Knowles-Nelson  Stewardship fund is available for about half for the purchase. Camp says this is a rare opportunity for St. Germain...

"....this property adjoins current town park property and it would just enhance our town park. Currently there's a nature and hiking trail on the property. In the winter we plan to convert the trail over to cross country ski trails. Also, there's a major corridor that runs through this piece of property...."

Camp says the purchase would preserve the snowmobile route.

The meeting is at 7 p.m. at the St. Germain Community Center.

Integrys has been looking to divest itself of the property.
