The Northwoods is a key point for what a state cabinet secretary says is a growing recreational and transportation area.

Wisconsin jumped to number three in the nation as a bicycle-friendly state. That ranking from the League of American Bicyclists 2014 rankings.

Northern and central Wisconsin have what are considered some of the best bicycle trails in the nation.

Last week in Tomahawk, Department of Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb said plans are in the works to expand bicycle paths...

?

".....we are working right now in cooperation with the Department of Natural Resources and some bicycle groups to look at some things we can do in regard to bicycle route numbering around the state, not only on DNR trails, but on our public road way system as well....."

A 2010 University of Wisconsin study found nearly half of the state's population rides bicycles. It showed the economic and health impact to state residents to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Both the DNR and Department of Tourism have webpages devoted to bicycling in Wisconsin. Another website is northwoodsbiking. com
