State Approved Photo ID Required For Elections

As of February 1, Wisconsin residents could start voting at their local clerk’s office for the February 16 local primaries, including three-way State Supreme Court contest. This is the first statewide election in four years that voters will have to show photo IDs. League of Women Voters Spokesperson Jane Trotter says voters need a state approved photo ID in order to receive a ballot.

“…an identification card issued by a federally recognized Indian tribe of Wisconsin, a driver’s license or state ID card receipt. So if somebody has gone recently to get a driver’s license but don’t have it yet in the mail, they have been given a receipt with a photo on it and that’s considered valid for 45 days.”

Trotter says a revoked or suspended driver’s license, college ID and proof of enrollment, military ID, U.S. passport and a certificate of naturalization issued within the last 2 years is also acceptable.  Photo IDs don’t have to include your current address, but Trotter says pay attention to expiration and issue date requirements.

Those voting absentee will need to include a copy of a photo ID with their absentee request.

People who don’t have a valid photo ID can get a free voter photo ID card at the DMV. For more information visit bringit.wisconsin.gov
