State Board To Rule On Invasive Species Changes

en.wikipedia.org

The state Natural Resources Board will decide Wednesday on revisions to the state's invasive species rule..
Vilas County's Invasive Species Coordinator Ted Ritter says the changes in both the land and water invasive rules have been talked about for a long time. Dozens of species are being categorized. Ritter says one plant has drawn attention....

"....so, for the first time ever, some cultivars of Japanese Barberry will no longer be legal to sell or transport or intentionally cultivate. No one is going to have to rip out such plants that are growing, but they can no longer be intentionally cultivated...."

He  thinks the retail outlets are ready for the likely ban...

".....but I think that nurseries in the area are aware that this is coming and I believe that some of them have already begun eliminating the harmful cultivars from their inventories...."

Ritter says this plant in particular can cause a lot of damage if it escapes into the wild.

A list of the proposed species changes and literature reviews are available by going to the DNR website and searching keyword "NR 40."
