A lead sponsor of a Wisconsin health care measure says it is necessary should the federal government get rid of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.
State Senator Jon Erpenbach says Democrats are moving the five bills under the mantle of a healthcare protection package... "....one of them deals with pre-existing conditions. Insurance companies just can't discriminate based on pre-existing conditions. They would be covered and there wouldn't be a cap on the insurance policy. Making sure that preventative care is covered. Essential benefits and well being are covered and access to family planning. Those are the five bills. Now we'll see what Governor Walker wants to do if the Affordable Care Act is repealed because health and insurance will be in our hands...." The Middleton Democrat says the most controversial part is likely to be the family planning bill, but he says the only access some women in Wisconsin have for tests like mammograms is through Planned Parenthood clinics. Erpenbach says at the federal level members of Congress are realizing getting rid of the Affordable Care Act means getting rid of access to healthcare, but they need to be ready should the federal government strike Obamacare. He says those people with pre-existing conditions need to know they have coverage... "....lets say somebody gets cancer. They have every right to all the access that they need. They shouldn't be priced out of anything they can't afford, there shouldn't be a cap on the amount they want to spend on their care. These are just fundamental, rights for anybody in the state...." He says the package provides essential coverage and he's hoping Republicans will sign onto the bill.
