State Prisoners To Return To Oneida County Soon

Oneida County Sheriff's Department

State of Wisconsin prison inmates are returning to Oneida county's jail to be housed.

Overflow state Department of Corrections inmates were housed beginning in 1999 in Oneida county. F

or several Northwoods counties, these prisoners provided a solid revenue stream to county budgets.

Sheriff Grady  Hartman says the state again agreed to pick up the program...

"..we've been talking with the state and we signed a contract to get our inmates back. We're working with the state on the logistics and the nuts and bolts of how to accomplish that. We're expecting in a couple of weeks to get our first batch of state inmates...."

Sheriff Hartman says the county has the jail cells available...

"....we're certified to have up to 201 prisoners at any one time. Currently we're around 70-ish inmates. We signed a contract for up to 100 state inmates..."

In 2009, the Department of Corrections ended the contracts with local sheriff's departments and decided to house state inmates only in state facilities.

Sheriff Hartman estimates about a million dollars a year could come to the county with enough beds filled.
