State Urges More Compressed Natural Gas Use

The state is hoping to attract truckers and others using Diesel fuel to an alternative: compressed natural gas.

"....a very clean, affordable fuel. It's terrific for business owners because it lowers their fuel costs by fifty percent..."

That's State Energy Office spokesperson Stephanie Marquis talking about CNG.

She says there's also another key benefit...

".....it's a very clean, affordable fuel. It's terrific for business owners because it lowers their fuel costs by about 50 percent...."

Marquis says on average, Compressed Natural Gas costs about $1.65 per gallon less than Deisel. The state has been holding roundtables to encourage businesses using heavy-duty vehicles to try CNG.

In 2013 2.4 million gallons of CNG fuel were used. By the end of 2014, that amount had grown to 5.7 million gallons. Marquis says they will continue to focus  on getting more CNG stations. She says another goal is to get private and municipal fleet operators to switch over to CNG.

Marquis says they've held roundtable sessions around the state on the issue and more roundtables are set for 2015.
