Stations Set Up For Hunters To Check Deer

Wikimedia Commons

The DNR is again asking successful Northwoods deer hunters to help them out to track Chronic Wasting Disease.

Oneida, Forest and Vilas counties will see DNR staff will be sampling deer in those counties in addition to Oconto county in areas around two CWD-positive captive deer facilities.

Wildlife health section chief Tami Ryan says the Northwoods CWD problem is new and they would like hunters to help with the study...

“...we don’t know what CWD(numbers are) in the wild deer herd in that area of the state. This is disease detection surveillance, and that is informed by the samples that are provided....”

Ryan says successful hunters are asked to submit needed tissues for CWD sampling. Ryan says says they have cooperating stations available for hunters to bring in the deer....

"....we have locations in Rhinelander, Three Lakes--two locations there--Eagle River and Crandon. Hunters can go to the (DNR) website, type in the keyword "CWD"...."

Ryan says there’s more information on the DNR websiteby putting the letters ‘CWD’ into the search box. She says locations of those stations are on that page
