Quitting smoking and tobacco use can be very difficult for those who have been using it for a long time. Experts say within the first 7 to 10 days it’s especially difficult. Supportive family, friends, and co-workers can make this transition easier. Vilas County Public Health Department spokesperson, Tammi Boers says supporters should respect that person’s needs.

“..and it depends on what that person is like.,.you know everybody is different. So some people might need the constant reminders and encouragement, and other people might need less interaction. So you just check in to see what they’d like. Just don't nag them or scold them or preach to them. Just be supportive and give them praise.. And even reward them if they’re doing a great job.”

Boers reminds supporters to not be judgmental as nicotine is highly addictive making it very difficult to quit.

There are several ways to help someone quit, including going to a healthcare provider who can discuss medications and provide other resources.
