Swearingen To Chair Legislative Panel On Rural Schools

legis.wisconsin.gov

State Representative Rob Swearingen has been asked to Chair the Assembly Speaker's Task Force on Rural Schools.

The Rhinelander Republican was appointed by Speaker Robin Vos to study issues like schools financial stability, declining enrollment and transportation needs that are unique to most rural school districts.

He says he went along with a group of Rhinelander school officials to Madison several weeks ago to talk to legislators and officials about rural school problems...

?

"....we discussed at that time specifically issues facing Rhinelander and the Rhinelander school district in terms of continually going back to referendum. The Speaker followed up on his promise of not kicking this can down the road and realizes as much as I do we have to do something about these rural schools as they are as important as the schools in more populated areas...."

Swearingen says the task force wants to hear from administrators in the rural districts about how they are dealing with several core issues.

He says after the Task Force is formally established, he will hold the first meeting in Rhinelander, possibly in October.
