Gifting a pet this holiday season takes more thought than simply getting the animal and giving to an unsuspecting recipient.
Oneida County Humane Society Assistant Director Karen Norling says there are things to consider before giving a pet as a gift...
".....is this a wanted pet? Giving a pet is giving a responsibility You're not just giving them something cute and fuzzy, you're giving them a lifetime commitment. It's not something that you spring on somebody, it takes a lot of thought...."
Norling says there is a way to move the process forward that is a win-win....
"...what we would recommend is they purchase a gift certificate from their local humane society. We do have those available here, so the potential new pet owner can meet and pick out their pet themselves...."
Norling says they occasionally get someone in for the gift of a pet. She says they encourage any potential adopters to meet and spend time with an animal before they adopt. She says a person would know best what type of pet would work for them.
TheOneida County Humane Society has 15 dogs and they have more than 40 cats available for adoption.
