Tax Deadline Delayed This Year

irs.gov

April 15 is tax filing day each year, unless it doesn't happen that day.

Your tax returns must be received electronically or postmarked by midnight, April 18. April 15 is a routine business day, so we asked Wisconsin Department of Revenue Secretary Ric Chandler why the delay...

".....that's because April 15 is a holiday in the District of Columbia. It actually is April 16 is Emancipation Day, the day when President Lincoln freed the slaves in the District of Columbia. Since April 16 is a Saturday, the holiday moved to the 15th and that means the tax filing deadline in the District of Columbia gets moved to the 18th, so that then applies to the whole country..."

Chandler says the extension also applies to extensions...

"...everything that normally would have an April 15 deadline has an April 18 deadline. If people can't get their return done by the 18th, they can file for an automatic extension that gives them until October 15 to file their tax returns..."

He says go to the IRS website at irs.gov for more information.
