Tax Filing Means ID Thieves In High Gear

en.wikipedia.org

It's time to file taxes, and a state Department of Revenue spokesperson says filers need to be wary of someone trying to steal their money electronically.

Spokesperson Stephanie Marquis says about 85 percent of all state tax filings are online. She says the Department of Revenue's system has never been compromised...

"....thieves will try to get information from some other source then try to file a tax return. That's what we're trying to stop. We're using our short quiz again that only the taxpayer should know the answers to. We also ask for some more documentation again...."

If a thief can get some basic information they can attempt to get your refund check directed to them using your identity. Marquis says thieves get identity information from other sources then attempt the fraud. She says the Department of Revenue will not call you. She says they will send a letter to you if there is a matter to be cleared up. She says they also will ask you to take a quiz or some other information that only you would know.

Marquis says this is the time of the year when the number of information scams goes up.
