A Thanksgiving Fire Would Burn More Than The Turkey

en.wikipedia.org

There's lots of cooking going on during Thanksgiving, but a little known statistic might give cooks a a pause to think about safety.

Here's Wisconsin Emergency Management spokesperson Tod Pritchard...

"....I don't know if people know Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for home cooking fires. 67 percent of the fires start when the food is on the stove and is not attended to...."

Pritchard says frying poses the greatest risk of fire. If using a turkey fryer, make sure you follow the manufacturer guidelines regarding appropriate use of the appliance. Keep potholders, oven mitts, wooden utensils and other items away from your stovetop Keep children away from the stove. Pritchard says a safety tip is to make sure a fire extinguisher is nearby the kitchen.

He says make sure the fire extinguisher has an "A", "B",and "C" rating to it. More information is at the Wisconsin Emergency Management website...Ready Wisconsin.
