Thin Ice Is Potentially Hazardous Says Warden

The DNR's Chief Warden is cautioning hunters and others outdoors this weekend to be very wary of ice conditions.

The early cold has frozen over some lakes, but the conditions vary. Some lakes have not frozen over.
Warden Todd Schaller  says use extreme caution...

"....make sure they know the ice thickness before they venture(out), and to realize that ice is never considered 'safe'. It's always unpredictable..."

Schaller says the ice will vary by conditions...

".....it really varies from place to place, and water temperature varies on location. It depends upon flow, it depends upon depth..a lot of factors there, so it's hard to say generally if folks should be venturing out on the ice..."

He says snow insulated the ice in some spots, making it even less dependable. Schaller says wear a summertime life jacket and have an ice pick with you to help you out if you do go in, and take a 'spud' bar to test the ice as you move forward.
