Time To Get Ice Shacks Off Northwoods Lakes, Rivers

deanbakerphotography.com

Time to get the ice shacks off your favorite fishing hole.

Anywhere south of Highway 64 the shacks had to be off the hard water this past weekend. North of Highway 64, the deadline is this coming weekend says DNR Recreational Safety Warden Jeff Dauterman in Antigo. He says the warming temperatures this week could mean your home away from home could become stuck in the ice...

?

"....the shanties tend to sink down into the ice and then that re-freezes and you can cause a lot of damage to the shacks trying to get them out. They end up trying to chisel them out or maybe have to use a chainsaw to get them out. A lot of damage can be done to them..."

You can be fined for leaving your shack past the removal date. Anglers can still use shelters but have to remove them each day.

After last year's brutal winter, some anglers couldn't get the shacks off the ice and had to burn them down. That resulted in fines for littering.
