Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week Observed

en.wikipedia.org

Governor Walker has declared this week as Wisconsin’s Tornado & Severe Weather Awareness Week in Wisconsin.

Dawn Robinson from Oneida County Emergency Management says the awareness week is designed to get businesses and the public to think about what they should do when one of the deadliest of storms approaches...

"....it's an opportunity for everyone to test their plans, improve their plans, and if nothing else, to establish a plan. Timing is of the essence to save lives...."

Wisconsin Emergency Management, the National Weather Service and the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association (WBA) have again teamed up to sponsor the statewide tornado drill scheduled for Thursday, April 14. For the first time, a mock tornado warning will be issued at 6:55 p.m. on Thursday, April 14.Earlier in the day, a mock tornado watch will be issued at 1:00 p.m. and a mock tornado warning will be issued at 1:45 p.m. Many radio and TV stations across the state will issue the test tornado warnings. WXPR will participate in the drills.

In addition, mock alerts will be issued on NOAA Weather Radios and many communities will sound their tornado sirens. Robinson says having a NOAA weather radio can be a lifesaver...

".....the information from the National Weather Service is broadcast immediately. That is for the affected areas. When a watch is issued on the NOAA weather radios it will come across and the light on the radio will stay on until that event is over...."

The National Weather Service says Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes each year.
