Town Of Washington ATV Ordinance To Town Board

en.wikipedia.org

A preliminary draft ATV/UTV ordinance that would open all town roads in the Vilas County town of Washington may be ready for presentation at the May 2nd town board meeting after discussion Wednesday between town supervisors, representatives of ATV clubs, and county officials.

The town board approved ATV and UTV travel on all town roads after a mail survey showed over 60% supported it.

Town supervisor Steve Burr indicated they wanted to learn from established ATV clubs on how to sign town roads and if they should be open year around. Gary Lagueux  of the Landover ATV club said they would do the required road signing saying “we've got businesses backing us and our club members will do the actual signing.”

Phelps town chairman Steve Doyan felt no roads should be opened until proper signing is in place due to liability issues with Mark Kirby of the Three Lakes Nicolet ATV club agreeing. Three Lakes previously requested ATV access on Dam and Nine Mile roads in the town of Washington to reach Military Road but were denied.

Town supervisor Keith Numrich favored year around use especially when there may be no snow in December. The draft ordinance could be adopted May 2nd and published in time for a Memorial Day opening for those town roads with proper signs.
