Tri-County Speaks out About Domestic Violence in Youth Relationships

www.flickr.com

School is in session and the influence of peer pressure triggers the concern of domestic violence in youth. Tri-County Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Director Shellie Holmes says the best way to end abuse before it begins is to stop the cycle.

“We know that teen dating violence crosses all lines of race, culture, and the culture of the school also makes a big difference. So we try to bring that to their attention and help the teachers also recognize what some might consider to be normalized teen behavior but it’s actually very abusive and controlling.”

Holmes says Tri-County does presentations and workshops in area schools to help and encourage students to speak up. She says anyone who is a victim can call the Tri-County Hotline. Anyone under the age of 18 needs parental consent to receive counseling.
