A Tunnel Exposed During Rhinelander Streetscape Construction

A long-rumored downtown tunnel has been exposed as crews continue the underground utility work as part of downtown Rhinelander Streetscape above and below ground updating.

A tunnel was exposed below Stevens Street running from the Associated Bank building to the bank drive-up across the street. Town and Country Engineering project manager Mark Barden says the tunnel was no surprise...

"......the city was aware of that during the design process. The property owner has an agreement with the city to allow that tunnel to be there. We have utilities going underneath it and we're going to be replacing some storm sewer that goes through that tunnel..."

Courtney Street recently opened on the far western part of the downtown street reconstruction, and the Davenport Street bridge will reopen in early July.  Other main street work will continue through mid-July.
