Unit That Opened Lincoln Hills Investigation To Be Eliminated

An internal affairs unit that exposed alleged abuses at the state's juvenile institutions will be eliminated next month.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says the Department of Corrections will incorporate the unit into a division that seeks to reduce sexual assaults at the Lincoln Hills boys school and Copper Lake girls school in Lincoln County.

The agency will no longer have a separate unit that investigates employee misconduct. The state's largest news outlet obtained a memo to employees which says the new division will exceed federal standards for eliminating prison sex assaults. It also promises to keep probing alleged employee misconduct.

The internal affairs unit uncovered allegations that have been investigated for two-and-a-half years by state and federal agencies. The state Justice Department yielded to the federal probe last year.
