Utility Cutoff Moratorium To End Next Week

en.wikipedia.org

Wisconsin residents behind in their utility bills have been given notice they need to make arrangements or face possibility of a disconnection.

Wisconsin's winter moratorium on utility disconnections ends on April 15.

Elise Nelson from the state Public Service Commission of Wisconsin says customers should act soon...

".....utilities are not permitted to disconnect residential customers between November 1 and April 15. But after April 15, utilities are no longer required to provide service to customers who have fallen behind on their bills. To avoid disconnection, the PSC of Wisconsin is encouraging customers to contact their local utilities to set up a payment plan...."

Leah Van Zile from Wisconsin Public Service says they will make arrangements with past-due customers...

"...we highly encourage customers behind on their bills to either make the payment in full, or contact WPS at 866-215-5812 to make payment arrangements...."

One of those arrangements is budget billing, where a specified amount is paid each month. Van Zile says customers eligible for heating assistance should contact Social Services in their county or a website from Home Energy Plus at homeenergyplus. wi. gov.

Van Zile says this is the time of the year when scam artists prey on utility customers. She says the caller demands payment right away using a pre-paid credit card. She says WPS does not collect payment that way.
