An Eagle River man involved in an armed standoff last month in the Vilas County town of Washington will enter pleas to 1st degree recklessly endangering safety and going armed while intoxicated on September 26 after a preliminary hearing Tuesday.

Mark Mayo, 48, allegedly held officers at bay for about two hours on Deerskin Road where he threatened to end his life by drowning or gunshot having fired at least 13 times after officers arrived. At his preliminary hearing, deputy Randy Schneider of the Vilas County Sheriff's department testified when he arrived there were three shots fired, one of which he heard whizzing through the tree branches above him.

Sheriff's department dispatch indicated Mayo called them and indicated he had a 9 millimeter handgun with two magazines each with 15 rounds and admitted drinking and taking medications.

Public defender John Voorhees argued Mayo's action didn't rise to the level of disregard for human life but Vilas County Judge Neal Nielsen, III disagreed, finding probably cause a felony was committee, setting September 26 for arraignment.

Mayo remains in custody under a $25,000 cash bond.
