Vilas Committee Clears Way For Multi-Use Highway Trails

Public Domain Pictures

The Vilas County forestry committee gave the green light Wednesday to apply for ATV funds for 10 miles of multi-use off highway trails that would improve connections to the developing RV Park by Torch Lake south of Conover while at the same time linking communities.

"We are shovel ready for ATV's from Eagle River north to Conover and can apply now for ATV maintenance funds," according to county recreation administrator Dale Mayo who said most of the trail would be on existing snowmobile trails.

Those funds would be a 100 percent grant from the Off Road Vehicle Counsel.

Mayo strongly said this would be a multi-purpose trail and in no way, shape, or form is Vilas County dedicating this as an exclusive ATV trail. It can be used by equestrians, snowmobiles, hikers, and bicycles if they want to. Only vehicles and trucks would be prohibited. Jeff Currie of Great Headwaters Trails agreed applying for the funds made sense and supported links and future connections with the need to look at cooperation. One wetland segment would have to have an elevated boardwalk whose design is currently being on for a future bid package
