Vilas County Courthouse Security Recommendations Forwarded

courthousehistory.com

Establishing security at the Vilas County courthouse will cost an estimated $150,000 the first year and will include contracting with a private security firm for public entry weapons screening as well as video surveillance of the courthouse campus, both designed to keep the public safe while visiting and staff safe while working.

The Public Property committee approved sending the county board a resolution that authorizes “reasonable measures” to implement an access and security plan. The plan is broadly outlined with not all operational details available to the public. Courthouse visitors will be restricted to the new entrance on Court Street. Per Mar security will have non-leathal- armed staff for screening. Entry to the Justice Center will be supervised by Sheriff deputies for visitors to the jail and Sheriff's department. All persons entering the courthouse will empty pockets and pass through a magnetometer with all bags, briefcases, and packages searched.

The proposal will be presented to the county board Sept. 26.
