Vilas County Snowmobile Trails to Open Early

Joe Ross

An early opening for Vilas County trails has snowmobile clubs and local businesses in good spirits.  The date was moved up from Tuesday December 17th to this Friday December 13th at 6 pm.

Vilas County Parks and Recreation Forester Dale Mayo says opening day usually happens after the four-day antlerless deer hunt ends.  But he says this year low temperatures and snow conditions seem to have discouraged many hunters.

“We just have a unique combination of enough snow and cold temperatures, and very few participants as far as hunting out in the woods. And we just deemed it appropriate to open a little early to get the area economy going a little bit.”

Mayo says area clubs had trails maintained and ready to go.  Sno Eagles Club spokesperson Holly Tomlanovich says clubs have been preparing for the season for months.

“About August is when we start doing the prep work as far as the trails. That’s brushing trees, cutting trees, grading, putting in signs.”

The Phelps trail system is still closed, possibly until next week.  Some lake trails are also still not open until ice conditions improve.

Oneida County trails are still scheduled to open December 17th.
