Vilas Courthouse Addition Cost Likely To Rise

www.genealogyinc.com

After approving spending up to $10 million for a courthouse addition, the Vilas County board will be asked to spend additional funds, possibly another million dollars, to add a second story shell that may not be used for years.

The county public property committee learned Tuesday from architect Kurt Berner of the Samuels Group, to reduce the cost to under $10 million part of the addition would only be one story.

When showed drawings of what the building would look like with one story on one side, committee member Steve Doyan stated “it's ugly leaving the second story off.”

The committee debated for over an hour on the final design. Member Carolyn Ritter noted it would be shell space now but we'll go over budget if we build it. Berner indicated they won't have final numbers until November but suggested the second story be an “add on” for the bid package. A motion made to go forward with the full two story design lost when confronted with the “not to exceed” the $10 million approved by the county board.

A second motion to have an alternative added to the bid package was adopted, but only after discussion of where the extra funds would come from.
