Another season is upon us as in tax filing season. The state's top revenue official says there's free help.

Department of Revenue Secretary Richard Chandler says the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites are available across the state....

"...it's volunteers from the Department of Revenue, the IRS,, from private organizations who get trained then offer free tax filing assistance for low-income individuals, for seniors, for individuals with disabilities, for military personnel. We have about 200 sites across the state. If people want to find a site in their area, they can call(telephonically) 2-1-1...."

Most of the sites are open one or two days a week. Sometimes appointments are needed. Chandler says they tend to be in places like libraries, community centers.

Chandler says more than 60,000 people were served at the state VITA sites. He says this is especially helpful for people who don't have a computer or are nervous about the tax filing process. Chandler says most returns are filed within the first few weeks of tax filing season or in the last 2-3 weeks. He says in the first three weeks they get about 25 percent of returns with a lull in March. In the last few weeks, the rest of filers come forward.
