There will be lots of purple  this Saturday in Rhinelander.

The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

Outreach specialist Julie St. Pierre in Rhinelander says the main base will be the Rouman Cinema on Lincoln Street. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m.

She says the walk has grown over the last decade as the public is becoming more aware of how this devastating disease will affect people you know...

"....we currently have over 200 walkers and 31 teams registered for the walk next Saturday but we would love even more people there to join us and pack the Rouman Cinema full of people supporting the Alzheimer's Association...."

St. Pierre says the walk route from the Cinema is being finalized. She says they usually walk in the downtown area, but had to find other routes because of the ongoing construction. She says they have a two mile walk and a shorter alternate route being planned.

She says while some of the money is used for research, most of it stays here in the Northwoods, supporting local programs...

"....programs that are geared for general community awareness of the disease. But then very specific family caregiver classes. It supports the support groups that take place across the Northwoods as well as the Northwoods Memory Cafe...."
