If you're not using the prescription drugs in your medicine cabinet, there's a better place to put them than down the toilet.
Area law enforcement says the 7th Annual Take Back Initiative is set for Saturday, October 26 in three Oneida county places.
Oneida County Detective Sergeant Terri Hook says the unneeded drugs will be collected and destroyed....
"We'll take vitamins, we'll take prescription medications...we cannot take anything that has aerosol or something with a sharp, like some kind of injectable...."
Hook says that also means they can't take inhalers. She says the point is to get temptation out of medicine cabinets. It takes away the incentive to burglarize residences. Flushing the drugs down the toilet or throwing them in the trash can cause environmental problems...
"That's not the proper way to dispose of these kinds of medications. They have to be incinerated and so we make sure they are taken to the proper place to have that done. It is quite expensive, so that is why the D.E.A. has come up with this collection where local law enforcement, and the DEA, comes together to collect these things."
The collections are Saturday, October 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rhinelander Police Department, the Three Lakes town hall and police station and the Nokomis fire department.
In Minocqua, the collection will be at the Marshfield Clinic Pharmacy from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. During the April collection, Wisconsin residents turned in more than 23 tons of meds.
