White Lake Voters To Decide Again On School Funding

openclipart.org

The White Lake school board is hoping the third time is a charm, as they voted Thursday night to ask voters in April to exceed state-mandated revenue limits.

Referendums asking for $250,000 for three years were twice narrowly defeated last year. District Administrator Bill Fisher says the board Thursday night unanimously approved asking voters this time for $300,000 per year for five years.

Fisher says after the latest referendum was defeated, they cut several programs, but a further rejection could lead to an end point...

"....if the district does not pass an operating referendum we will be out of money by the middle of the 2017-18 school year..."

Fisher says they will go to the public again to explain the issues facing the district. Fisher gave a presentation last year when the Speaker's Task Force on Rural Education traveled the state to hear about issues facing rural districts. Dwindling state aid as enrollments shrink has put pressure on many districts to keep operating.
