White Spectrum Broadband in Wisconsin?

Wisconsin State Legislature
Senator Patrick Testin

A new wireless Internet technology could be coming to Wisconsin if the state assembly allows it.

Senator Patrick Testin of Stevens Point explains:

"White space channels that are broadcasted over the airwaves... it's believed that that can also be used to provide internet right to your homes. Essentially, individuals that would use this technology would almost kind of have like their own WiFi modem in their household."

Testin says broadband Internet was once considered a luxury item, but now it's toeing the line of a basic need for many, especially for students:

Parents, educators, and even students have said just so they can do their homework assignments, they'll have to drive to a parking lot outside of a coffee shop or a library just so they connect to the WiFi because they don't have good connection at home.

He says the idea is in its infancy, and because it involves use of the broadcast spectrum federal approval is needed:

And then from there we'll kind of determine what the cost will be and providers are going to be able to offer. We see this as a potential big opportunity in regards to connectivity.

It's expected that the assembly will take up the measure later this month.

The State Journal of Madison reports that Wisconsin is seen as an ideal testing ground for the technology based on the availability of federal matching dollars for broadband projects in the state.
