The January-like conditions probably don't have you thinking spring, but the state has posted it's annual campaign to remind boaters to stay safe around dams.

It's Dam Safety Awareness Week.

There are a number of dams along the Wisconsin River and tributaries, most generating power for paper companies or utilities. Water levels rise on the rivers during the spring melt.

Wisconsin Public Service spokesperson Matt Cullen says it's a time to bring awareness to folks on the water than high water can spell trouble to those in a boat...

"....the purpose of the week is to emphasize the importance of safety near dams and waterways to help prevent accidents. We strongly urge recreational and fishing enthusiasts to be safe around dams and hydroelectric facilities and the precautions to take when traveling near those facilities..."

Cullen outlines some precautions...

"....as the weather continues to be winter-like here in Wisconsin, another important safety tip is to avoid the ice near dams and reservoirs as it's often is thin, inconsistent and unsafe...."

Cullen says when boating near dams, Obey all warning signs heed horns or sirens, be aware of rapidly changing water conditions, stay outside the buoy lines and away from restricted areas near dams and have an escape route set should something start to go awry, among other safety tips.
