The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says Pokemon GO can cause real-world hazards for users.

Pokemon Go is the newest smartphone app that uses amplified reality settings to catch  Pokemon. Director of Transportation Safety Dave Pabst says drivers need to put their phones down and concentrate on driving.

“Well we’re seeing a disturbing trend where people are crashing while playing a videogame in their vehicles. And it’s just like any other distraction we have out there, it’s a choice that people make and so they need to just put the phone away and concentrate on driving.. You know.. Keep your hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, and your brain on the driving task.”

Pabst says it pays to pay attention as players can be fined around $200 for driving while playing Pokemon Go.

He says so far there have been 2 crashes reported in the state since the game’s release nearly two months ago.

The Wisconsin State Patrol reminds Pokemon players to be aware of their surroundings and challenges them to put safety ahead of a high score. They say if players need to travel longer distances, to designate a driver or try free ride services in  your area.
