Wisconsin Fishing Opener Saturday; Walleyes Top Target

en.wikipedia.org

The tall tales for 2016 begin Saturday as the traditional Wisconsin fishing opener greets anglers.

DNR Northern District Fisheries Supervisor in Woodruff, Mike Vogelsang, says walleyes are the traditional opening weekend fish to seek. He says their surveys find good populations...

".....we've been our actively doing surveys for the last couple of weeks, the dozen or so lakes we've been on right in the area look very well. We work on stocked lakes, naturally reproducing lakes. They all seem to be holding their own right now...."

He says the goal is to bump up some of the stocked fisheries with extended growth walleyes with funds through the walleye initiative. He says the elusive walleye is mostly done spawning, though some stragglers might still be in the shallows. He says fish the rock bars and weed edges.....

"....typically our best fishing happens if it's overcast and we have a little bit of wind to create that walleye chop(on the water) that folks talk about. Those anglers fishing for walleye should shoot for the early morning hours or the late evening hours, the darker times of the day...."

He says bass also will bite this time of the year, but that fishery is catch-and-release until a few weeks from now.
