Wolf Summit II In Sugar Camp April 8

Last fall, Wisconsin State Senator Tom Tiffany and Representative Adam Jarchow organized a summit to lobby for the delisting of wolves from protections under the Endangered Species Act.

April 8, a supporting group is promoting a second wolf summit at the Sugar Camp town hall north of Rhinelander from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Wolf Summit II is sponsored by Wisconsin Wolf Facts.

Management of the wolf has been back and forth from federal protections to state protections allowing state control methods, back to federal protections after a federal judge's ruling. Laurie Groskopf is a spokesperson for the event. She says there's a possiblity that Congress will move this year to delist wolves again, putting them back into the state's hands along with an appeal in the court system.

She says the format has changed from last fall's summit...

".....there will be some opportunity at this summit for audience participation and audience discussion. The other summit had more speakers, this summit has less speakers so each has more time. So I think there will be more give-and-take at this summit, so I think it's a good thing to have more participation...."

Speakers include David Ruid, U.S. Wildlife Services, Nathan Roberts from the Wisconsin DNR, and Jim Beers, retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. Among the topics will be depredation control, counting wolves, state management, and wolf impacts among other topics.

Agricultural and conservation groups are also sponsors. More information is available on the Wisconsin Wolf Facts website and there is an admission charge.

Last fall, several groups supporting the federal Endangered Species classification objected to the first summit including the Humane Society of the United States.
