There will be no recount in the 85th State Assembly District. Rep. Mandy Wright has has conceded the election.
Wright trailed David Heaton by 86 votes on Election Night out of more than 22,000 ballots cast. After the canvass, Heaton's lead was 85 votes.
Wright was entitled to a recount since her margin of defeat was less than one-half-of-one-percent. The recount must be requested by the losing candidate. Wright has declined to make that request.
Wright, a Democrat, served in the state legislature for one term. Republican Heaton's victory increases the GOP's majority in the assembly to 63-36.
The new legislative session begins on January 14.
Representative Wright issued the following statement Tuesday:
“I would like to thank all of my supporters for their countless calls and e-mails following the election last Tuesday. I am so fortunate to have so many wonderful people by my side as a candidate, and as an elected official."
After reviewing the final canvass results today, and speaking with both my family and my campaign team, I have decided that I will not seek a recount. Though the vote was extremely close, I believe that our poll workers, the County Clerk’s staff, and all of those involved in making our democratic process successful, performed their duties seamlessly on November 4th.
I would like to sincerely congratulate Representative-elect Heaton on his victory, and also extend my thanks for his willingness to serve this wonderful and diverse community. Running for public office is an enormous sacrifice for both a candidate, and their families, so I would also like to extend my congratulations to Dave’s wife and children.
I again want to thank my wonderful husband Josh, our three beautiful daughters, my incredible supporters, and my dedicated staff. As for me, over the next seven weeks, I will remain committed to serving the constituents of the 85th Assembly District both here at home, and in the State Capitol. "
